Dr. Patricia Bath was an American ophthalmologist, inventor, humanitarian, and educator.

Born in 1942, she became the first African American woman to receive a medical patent, for inventing the Laserphaco Probe, a device improving the treatment of cataracts. She also founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, which established that “eyesight is a basic human right.”

Her humanitarian work reflects principles of service, compassion, and the belief in improving the lives of others.

Let’s honor Dr. Patricia Bath’s legacy by recognizing the impact of faith and dedication in overcoming barriers. Her innovative spirit and humanitarian work remind us that we can all be instruments of change.
