Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree. In 1843, She had a religious experience and changed her name. She became an itinerant preacher.  

 She became an influential abolitionist and women’s rights activist. After gaining her freedom, she felt called by God to travel the country preaching about the abolition of slavery and the necessity of women’s suffrage. Her famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?”, delivered in 1851 at the Women’s Rights Convention, highlighted the strength and resilience of Black women and challenged prevailing notions of racial and gender inferiority.
